Produced by Brenda Brady, in association with the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Brenda’s Easy-to-Swallow Cookbook is for mouth cancer sufferers, and anyone who has difficulty chewing and swallowing food.

The softback book contains 40 pages of recipes and tips, from various people, including fellow sufferers and celebrity chefs Nigella Lawson, Rick Stein, Antony Worrall Thompson and Phil Vickery, who all kindly gave recipes for free.

Following Brenda\'s death in 2008, her husband John finished the book, and the first edition is now available to purchase.

All profits go to the Mouth Cancer Foundation.

Highly Commended!

November 20, 2010

We’re delighted to announce that ‘Brenda’s Easy-to-swallow Cookbook’ won the ‘Highly Commended’ prize, in the best charitable initiative category, at the Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Awards 2010.

Dr Vinod Joshi, the founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation says “Brenda’s Easy to Swallow Cookbook has already enhanced the lives of hundreds of head and neck cancer patients and survivors. The recipes offer a varied, appetizing and nutritional diet. Working with the Brady family to carry on Brenda’s legacy has been a real privilege; we are thrilled and honoured to receive such a widely recognised award.”

Brenda’s husband John, of Consilience Media, says: “We carried on Brenda’s work to get the book published partly to give us  a goal to achieve but also to mark the wonderful contribution Brenda made to the lives of people who knew her. To win an award for Brenda’s book is fantastic. We only wish she was here to receive the award for all her efforts. We hope the sales of the book will continue to add to the £15,000 Brenda raised for the Mouth Cancer Foundation.”

We’ve received the finished copies of the cookbooks from the printer and they look great! Some quick photos are below (click for larger versions).

To everyone who’s pre-ordered a book – we have been in touch (or will be very soon) with payment details. If for some reason we’ve missed you please drop us a line. And anyone else who’d like to purchase a copy – you can order yours here.

So far we’ve had a radio interview on BBC Radio Newcastle, which should be aired this Friday, and another tomorrow on the (perhaps) ironically named Smooth Radio. The book is ready this week to coincide with Mouth Cancer Awareness week. All profits go to the Mouth Cancer Foundation.

Reddit strikes!

November 6, 2009

Over 20,000 page views in one day!

Wow, I wasn’t expecting this response! Earlier today I posted a link promoting the cookbook and this site on, in the hope that a few people would click through to this site and perhaps strat spreadnig the word about the cookbook. I wondered if it would even get a response. I wasn’t quite prepared for what happened next. I had to leave the office but when I returned I was amazed to find it had made it’s way to the top of the front page, where it stayed for a few hours!

Several people commented on reddit that there weren’t any sample recipes on this site, so I immediately uploaded a double page spread. I will put some more up when time permits.

So this is just a quick post to say thanks for all the positive comments, messages of support and general feedback/suggestions. Maybe I should have waited until the site was a little more finished, but hey – we’ve already received pre-orders, and new recipes are starting to appear.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve this site, or more general feedback – please comment below.

Thanks redditors!

p.s. We go to print on Monday …

I hope this book of recipes based on patient’s experiences helps to make life a little easier for those who have had or are diagnosed with mouth cancer. – Dr Vinod Joshi, Chief Executive, Mouth Cancer Foundation

Easy-to-swallow Cookbook coverProduced by my Mum, Brenda Brady, in association with the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Brenda’s Easy-to-Swallow Cookbook is primarily for mouth cancer sufferers, who often find it difficult to eat following surgery.

Following my Mum’s death last year (2008) my Dad finished the book, and we’re almost ready to publish the first short run. Mum raised about £15,000 for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and was active on the support website.

She produced this collection of recipes from various people, including fellow sufferers, and a few celebrity chefs (including Nigella Lawson and Anthony Worrall Thompson) who all kindly gave recipes for free.

We’re now ready to take pre-orders! Please comment on this post or email us if you have any queries.
